The Center for Better Schools Launches Curriculum Design Effort for Experienced Teachers

The Center for Better Schools (Portsmouth, RI) in conjunction with the Brighter Choice Foundation (Albany, NY) has launched a design effort to create course materials for experienced, high performing K-12 classroom teachers. The work is designed to make these committed, talented teachers even more effective, of higher value to their schools, districts and networks and retain them in the profession of classroom teaching.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, among others, is supporting the funding for this work, which commenced in December 2010. The Center for Better Schools has recruited several outstanding, experienced curriculum design consultants and built a working team which includes Aspire Public Charter Schools (Oakland, CA), AUSL of the Chicago Public Schools (Chicago, IL), Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Schools (Charlotte, NC), Denver Public Schools (Denver, CO) and YES Prep Public Charter Schools (Houston, TX). The goal of the project is to answer the question, “What do we teach our highest performing, experienced teachers to make them even better?”

“While so many organizations around the country are focused on the important work of recruiting, training and mentoring new teachers in the profession, too little work is focused on the best, most experienced teachers and their improved effectiveness,” commented Tony Klemmer the founder of The Center for Better Schools and project leader. “By bringing together world class organizations committed to improving the effectiveness of their most experienced teachers, we will be able to make a major contribution to the broader teaching profession.”

Early results of the curriculum design project will be available for review in the late spring of 2011. Additional funding is being sought to complete the entire design process, as well.
